Tom's Of Maine Tells How It Removed Fossil Fuels From Its Deodorant

September 1, 2016: 12:00 AM EST
In 2015, Tom's of Maine was finally able to manufacture a deodorant that comes free of fossil-fuel derivatives. In the early 1990s, company co-founder Tom Chappell told company chemist Pam Scheeler to develop a deodorant that had no propylene glycol, an ingredient derived from natural gas. Tom's of Maine launched a propylene-glycol-free deodorant in 1993; however, it did not work in the summer. After finding a reliable supplier of vegetable-based propylene glycol, the company launched its first petroleum-free deodorant.
