L'Oreal USA Announces Layoff Plans For Kent And Redmond Facilities

L'Oreal USA said it plans to cut by 120 employees its workforce at its Kent distribution center and Redmond manufacturing facility. Announced in compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, most of the layoffs are at the Redmond facility. Most of the cutbacks are due to the plan of Clarisonic, which L'Oreal bought in 2011, to move production to external manufacturing partners.

Vietnam Tells Unilever To Pay Back Taxes

Vietnam's General Department of Taxation has told Unilever Vietnam to pay tax arrears covering the period 2009 to 2013 when the company expanded its local business operations. According to GDT, the country's laws did not offer corporate income tax incentives to investors who expanded their business during the period. GDT, however, has accepted the company's request to exempt it from paying the related fine.

Faced With Shrinking Domestic Market, Japanese Beauty Brands Speed Up Overseas Expansion

Japan's cosmetics companies are speeding up their efforts to expand their businesses overseas. Driven by the slowdown in foreign-tourist-driven sales, beauty brands are looking for new reliable sources of revenue. In July 2016, Shiseido Co. acquired US-based luxury cosmetics company Gurwitch Products LLC, the Japanese company's first foreign acquisition in six years. Earlier in June, the company signed an exclusive licensing deal with Italy-based luxury brand Dolce & Gabbana for sales of fragrances and other personal care products. In August, Kose Corp. launched its flagship skincare brand Sekkisei in Hawaii. Domestic sales of cosmetics reached 1.5 trillion yen in 2015, driven by foreign tourists; however, in April‒June 2016, average spending of foreign tourists fell 10 percent to 159,930 yen per person, compared with the same period in the previous year.

Unilever Eyes Takeover Of Honest Company

FDA's Ban On Antibacterial Soaps Affects Procter & Gamble

Procter & Gamble Co., along with other manufacturers, have to reformulate their antibacterial soaps or stop selling them and running related advertising, after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a ban on harmful ingredients. According to the FDA, the rule is expected to affect about 2,100 products, or 40 percent of soaps and body washes in the market. FDA said the ban covers consumer products with one or more of 19 active ingredients. Among the most commonly used chemicals are triclosan, in liquid soap, and triclocarban, which is used in bar soap.

Tom's Of Maine Tells How It Removed Fossil Fuels From Its Deodorant

In the early 1990s, company co-founder Tom Chappell told company chemist Pam Scheeler to develop a deodorant that had no propylene glycol, an ingredient derived from natural gas. Tom's of Maine launched a propylene-glycol-free deodorant in 1993; however, it did not work in the summer. After finding a reliable supplier of vegetable-based propylene glycol, the company launched its first petroleum-free deodorant.

Aimed at highlighting how its brands can help “make the world a better place,” the campaign features the film “So Long Old World.” Among the brands highlighted are Domestos and its efforts to help 5 million people have access to toilets, Persil and its support for providing 10 million children with education, and Dove and its campaign to help 19 million people have stronger self-confidence. Bright Future is at the core of the company's Sustainable Living Plan, Unilever said.

L'Oreal Completes Purchase Of IT Cosmetics

L'Oreal said it has completed its purchase of IT Cosmetics. Established in 2008 by Jamie Kern Lima and Paulo Lima, in partnership with leading plastic surgeons, the company seeks to give women with skincare and makeup products designed to solve skincare-related problems. IT Cosmetics currently has a lineup of more than 300 high-performance beauty products focused on color cosmetics skincare, brushes, and tools. It will join L'Oreal's Luxe Division.

Unilever Commits To Equal Pay In White House Pledge

Unilever US announced has signed President Obama’s Equal Pay Pledge, which is a commitment to, among other actions, conducting an annual company-wide gender pay analysis. The company noted that its Sustainable Living Plan, a strategy for sustainable growth, it had adopted a framework for fair compensation across the organization. The company noted that it is at 49 percent “gender balance for managers and above.” The White House Pledge also includes a commitment to reviewing hiring and promotion processes and procedures to reduce unconscious bias and structural barriers, and embedding equal pay efforts into broader equity initiatives.

Sephora Opens 400th Store On Chicago's Magnificent Mile

Sephora opened a new store, the beauty retailer's 400th location, on Chicago's Magnificent Mile. According to Sephora Americas president and CEO Calvin McDonald, the company launched its Beauty TIP Workshop retail concept as part of its efforts to “reset, rethink,” its business. McDonald said the concept's “teaching beauty” element gives the retailer a competitive advantage over its rivals. Sephora's optimism when it comes to having physical stores comes from its strategy of using brick-and-mortar stores to “provide a service, a mini-makeover,” and because they are designed to teach beauty, McDonald said.

Clinique For Men Readies Campaign Aimed At Promoting Skincare

Kao Licenses Several Hair-Color Patents To Procter & Gamble

Kao Corporation said it has signed a licensing deal with Procter & Gamble covering several of the Japanese company's patents for foam-type hair color. According to the company, the deal is the result of the companies' efforts to reach an amicable resolution of their patent dispute arising from P&G's Nice'n Easy hair-coloring product line. Covering past and future activities, the deal also applies to P&G's hair color business should the business be transferred to another company.

Unilever’s venture capital and private-equity unit led the funding round, which also saw other existing investors participating. Discuss.io uses videoconferencing and crowdsourcing to help clients expand their knowledge about their customers. According to the company’s CEO and founder, Zach Simmons, the company will use the latest cash infusion to hire engineers and double the size of its sales and marketing team.

Viable High-Tech Solutions To Grocery Store Food Waste Disposal Do Exist

Disposal of grocery store produce that is damaged, ugly, or otherwise surplus because of faulty buying, but cannot be donated, is a major economic and environmental problem. Produce decaying in landfills, for example – 35 percent of all landfill waste – is a major source of methane gas. A variety of emerging technologies can help solve the problem. But perhaps the best is so-called “Big Data.” A supermarket of any size that has access to real-time information and analytics tracking processes related to food disposal can better manage the amount and timing of what they order. This would ensure that most of the food brought into stores is destined for consumer refrigerators, not landfills. Meanwhile, unsold items are minimized and disposed of safely.

Louis Vuitton Announces Les Parfums Fragrance Collection

Louis Vuitton said it plans to launch the Les Parfums collection of fragrances on September 1, 2016. Marking the company's first perfume development and launch in 70 years, the collection will include seven fragrances. These are Rose Des Vents, Turbulences, Dans La Peau, Apogee, Contre Moi, Matiere Noire, and Mille Feux. Perfumer Cavallier Belletrud use the CO2 extraction process to produce the floral notes used in the fragrances. Coming in bottles designed by Marc Newson, each fragrance costs $240 for the 100ml and $350 for the 200ml.
